Chapter 12 - Scylla and Charybdis



Summary: (Jasmine)

In this chapter, Odysseus, travels back to Aeaea where he is to burry Elpenor and spend one last night with Circe where he learns about his journey home. After he sets sail he ends up passing the island of the sirens' where he and his men have to fight temtaions from their sweet songs. Then, they pass Scylla's lair trying to avoid Chary bdis where six sailors are eaten. After the end up at Thrinacia which Odysseus tries to avoid but he ends up getting persuaded into letting his crew rest there. But when he does they get stuck for a month on the island and his crew disobey's him and slaughters one of the cows of the sun. When the son god finds out he asks Zeus to punish Odysseus and his men and zeus says yes and creates another storm destroying their ship and killing his crew leaving Odysseus to survive by himself bearly. Once he escapes he ends up floating onto Ogygia.

pg 158: Anti hospitality- The sirens are suductive and try to get men to come to them. They then wreck the ships
all throughout the chapter Scylla and Charybdis show anti hospitality.
pg. 163- Homeric Similie-"For like an angler on a junting point, who casts his bait to lure the little fishes below, dangles his ling rod with its line protected by an oz-horn pipe, gets a bite, and whips his struggling catch to the land, Scylla had whisked my comrades, struggling, up to the rocks"

The first people Odysseus will encounter are the Sirens who bewitch people with their song.

How can he listen to the Sirens without being bewitched? (Sarah A)
His crew must tie him up and no matter how much he pleads, they much never let him go. To get past the Sirens without listening, they just need to stuff their ears with candle wax.

What does Scylla look like?
She has twelve feet all dangling in the air, 6 scrawny necks, each with a horrific head that have three rows of fangs which cause death. Her waist and below are in the cave but her heads protrude and she grabs men off passing ships.

What does Charybdis do? (Jaime)
She sucks up all the water three times a day and spits it back out three times.

What does Circe warn Odysseus about when he reaches Thrinacie? (Jaime)
That if any he or any of his men kill the cattle or the sheep none of them shall survive and if Odysseus does survive it will be a long time before he gets home.
